Awkwafina began as an American performer and rapper, making sly songs that addressed issues such as racial and sexuality with a humorous twist. In the years before she stepped to Hollywood, she was able to make a few songs. Born Nora Lum to Chinese and Korean immigrant parents in Forest Hills Queens her first taste of musician life came via the trumpet. In addition to classical and jazz, she started studying hip-hop when she was in her teens. While in college, she concentrated on her studies and took up a degree in women's studies as well as journalism. In a short period of time, in Beijing, Mandarin language classes were also available. Not until after graduation did her focus shift to music. In 2012, My Vag (as a retort to Mickey Avalon's My Dick) became an internet sensation and featured in her debut LP Yellow Ranger.
