Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure the family of Ford, they were managed by her mom, grandmother and godparents. As a young girl, Ford was battling anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by word associations. Ford was first fascinated by acting when she was a teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that it wasn't the ideal location for her. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt she was accepted. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring for Doctor Who. Ford didn't finish her studies until 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV on the show Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Tate was also a regular performer in theatre and eventually joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
